Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you?

ISK Martial Arts was created in 2001, but traces its lineage back to the start of Tang Soo Do in Cornwall in 1989. It has since added Kickboxing and the unique Kickstart kids classes to its available programs to give potential students everything they could want from Martial Arts.

ISK Martial Arts is affiliated to the EMTF (European Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do Federation) and its Instructors/Senior members attend the available training and development days in order to bring the latest methods for student development back to Cornwall as often as possible. The EMTF also provides great competition opportunity for those involved with ISK Martial Arts constantly being one of the biggest and best known groups at such events, always returning home with an impressive haul of silverware.

All Instructors are insured through MAGB (Martial Arts Association of Great Britain) and have local CRB checks completed through the Council.

All Instructors are Black Belts, fully certified through ISK Martial Arts under Master Rob James (5th Dan) and ratified by the EMTF giving World Wide recognition to those ranks attained.

What style(s) of martial arts do you teach?

Korean Karate (Tang Soo Do), Kickboxing and our highly successful Childrens Kickstart program (2 levels for different ages)

When and where are classes held?

Classes are held every night of the week and current locations and timetables can be found here. The main academy in Redruth is open every day of the week, and most Sundays.  Satellite schools in Falmouth, Penryn and Truro also offer classes for all ages and abilities, and we offer half price fitness classes for parents waiting during the kids class on Wednesday evenings at the academy in Redruth.  Click here for full details and timetables.

What do I need to bring to my first class, and what can I expect?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a drink. Your first class is free! Expect a warm, friendly welcome and to work up a good sweat! Your first class will consist of a warm-up and stretch, and then a mixture of punching and kicking drills, self-defence and forms.

Do I have to be fit and/or strong?

No. Both your fitness and strength will improve over time as you train with us, but we adjust your training to cope with all levels of ability. We have students of all ages and all abilities, and in martial arts strength is less important than technique.

What costs are involved?

Your first class is free. After that, sessions are £5 or £20 a month for one session per week, alternatively you can pay £50 per month for unlimited training at all affiliated ISK Martial Arts schools (this brings classes down to a potential £2.50 per session!)

Club membership is £20 per year which includes insurance. Uniforms for Tang Soo Do (top, bottoms and belt) are £20. Uniforms for kickboxing are £40 for lightweight top and bottoms, or £30 for lightweight bottoms and a club T-shirt.

Do you have gradings/belts?

Yes, all programs taught have a belt system, the Tang Soo Do and Kickboxing systems are the same, but the Kickstart program uses a different system with free testings for all students and no big tests (we use tags and a continual assessment). For more information about belts and gradings click here.

I have another question, can I speak to someone?

Of course. Feel free to pop in before any class to have a chat with one of our instructors, or give us a call or email and we’ll answer any questions you have.
